Youngsters can get creative at digital summer club

Children are being invited to take part in a Great Wolverhampton Build Off by joining a Digital Creator Club at their local library next week.

The four-hour long session will enable seven to 13-year-olds to explore digital art and photography, digital design, Lego modelling and Minecraft, and showcase their new-found skills through their own fantastic creations.

Digital Creator Club sessions will take place at Penn Library on Monday 23 August, Central Library on Tuesday and Wednesday, 24 and 25 August, Tettenhall Library on Thursday 26 August and East Park Library on Friday 27 August. The sessions run from 10am-2pm each day.

Councillor Stephen Simkins, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for City Economy, said: "The Digital Creator Club is an exciting opportunity for children to learn some new skills and show off what they can do in the world of Minecraft, by building with Lego or through digital art and photography.”

Places must be booked in advance and tickets are just £1 for library members and £3 for non-members. For more information, please call 01902 552025 or email libraries@wolverhampton.gov.uk. Parents do not need to stay with their children during the sessions, but children should bring a packed lunch.

Meanwhile, it's not too late for young readers to take up the Summer Reading Challenge and enjoy at least six different books during the school holidays.

The theme for this year's challenge is Wild World Heroes, a celebration of reading, nature and taking positive action to protect the environment.

Children can join in the fun by picking up free enrolment packs, subject to availability, from any of Wolverhampton's libraries or by registering at www.wildworldheroes.org.uk, where people can download a free copy of The Secret Explorers and the Rainforest Rangers and find a list of other recommended reads.

Both the Summer Reading Challenge and the Digital Creator Club sessions are part of the council’s Yo! Summer Festival, which is offering hundreds of events across the city, many free of charge, to keep children, young people and their families active and entertained throughout the school holidays – more details at www.yowolves.co.uk.

It's free to join Wolverhampton's libraries. For more information, please visit www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/libraries.
