Young on right track with Yo! Festival athletics masterclass

Youngsters have been getting into the Olympic spirit by joining an athletics masterclass at WV Active Aldersley – one of more than 450 Yo! Summer Festival events for children and young people taking place in Wolverhampton over the next few weeks.

Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club’s Athletics Week is putting six to 15-year-olds through their paces in everything from sprints and hurdles to the shot putt and javelin.

Councillor Beverley Momenabadi, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “Team GB are performing so well at the Tokyo Olympics and it’s fantastic to see children and young people being inspired by their sporting heroes.

“Athletics Week, put on by our friends at Wolverhampton and Bilston Athletics Club, is a brilliant way to introduce people to a wide range of track and field events.

“This event is just one of over 450 Yo! Summer Festival events for children, young people and their families, ranging from sports and holiday clubs to fun days and arts and crafts, and I would urge people to get involved and make this a holiday to remember.”

Other highlights include Family Summer Fun sessions at Bantock House Museum, BrickLive Fantasy Kingdom at Wolverhampton Art Gallery, Wolverhampton Music Hub's Summer Rock School and The Way Youth Zone's Summer Holiday Club.

There are also free swimming lessons from WV Active, an extensive selection of events and activities for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities and the Yo! Relight Festival, offering a range of family-friendly events under a big top in West Park, including Jurassic Earth, Kids Fest, film shows, Fireman Sam Live! and Andy and the Odd Socks.

As well as details of festival activities, the new online platform also offers children, young people and families support, advice and information on everything from mental health and wellbeing to education and careers.
