Young musicians on song at Yo! Festival rock school

Aspiring young musicians have been hitting the right notes at a rock school – one of over 450 events taking place over the holidays as part of Wolverhampton's Yo! Summer Festival.

Wolverhampton Music Service is staging two, week-long rock schools at Newhampton Arts Centre during which children and young people learn how to play an instrument, learn performance skills and play in a band, culminating in a live performance on stage.

Councillor Dr Michael Hardacre, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: "Music is an important part of a young person's education, and our Music Service provides quality teaching for pupils across Wolverhampton.

"This Summer Rock School is an excellent opportunity for children and young people to discover the joys of playing a musical instrument and to show off their talents on stage.”

The rock school forms part of the inaugural Yo! Summer Festival, featuring a mix of more than 450 free and paid-for events and activities, ranging from sports and holiday clubs to fun days and arts and crafts, for children, young people and their families. For full details of what's happening where, please visit the Yo! Summer Festival website, www.yowolves.co.uk.

Councillor Hardacre added: "The Yo! Summer Festival has built on the success of our WV Holiday Squad programme by bringing together the very best activities taking place in Wolverhampton for children and young people during the school holidays, and I would urge everyone to join in the fun."

As well as details of festival activities, the new online platform which has been launched as part of the Yo! brand – www.yowolves.co.uk – also offers children, young people and families support, advice and information on everything from mental health and wellbeing to education and careers.

Wolverhampton Music Service provides high quality tuition and musical opportunities for youngsters from schools across the city, including the chance to perform with its flagship groups, Wolverhampton Youth Orchestra and Wolverhampton Youth Wind Orchestra.
