Young driver road safety campaign launched

WALSALL Council today launched a road safety campaign to remind young drivers of the potentially catastrophic consequences of inappropriate driving behaviour.

Launching the campaign, Road Safety Officers displayed 119 red roses at the Wisemore campus of Walsall college, each rose representing a young person aged 17 to 24 who has been killed or seriously injured in the West Midlands over the last 12 months whilst either the driver or passenger in a vehicle.

Students at Walsall College were also offered the chance to use the road safety driving simulator, which looks at the effects of distractions on their driving and the impact of driving whilst under an influence.

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Portfolio Holder with responsibility for Regeneration & Transportation, said: “This campaign identifies the terrible consequences for both drivers and passengers when things go wrong.

“The display of roses, representing the tragic loss of life through dangerous driving, has captured the attention of students at Walsall College. This provided an opportunity for our Road Safety Officers to have many engaging discussions with young people today to encourage better driver and pedestrian behaviour and road safety.”
