The Royal Wolverhampton Trust have teamed up with Wolverhampton Art Gallery and Wolverhampton City Archives to present a collection of photographs from past decades for ‘2020: International Year of the Nurse and Midwife’.
This fascinating online exhibition - available from today (Thursday October 29) - is in conjunction with the birth of Florence Nightingale 200 years ago, and features images taken by the NHS Trust’s Clinical Illustration Department and nurse Katie Haywood. It shows nurses and midwives in their working lives today and includes pictures from the past that celebrate the rich nursing and midwifery heritage in Wolverhampton. It includes a selection of portraits of nurses and midwives during this year (2020).
The portraits demonstrate the challenges faced by the NHS at this time. Some of the photographs were taken before the Covid-19 pandemic, when social distancing measures and other restrictions were not in place.
Cabinet Member for City Economy, Councillor Stephen Simkins, said: “The selection of photographs that have been selected show a story through time and represent the importance of the NHS and the role nurses and midwifes played then and now.
“I urge everyone to take the time to visit the website and celebrate 2020: International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, and I thank The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust in working with the council and all that they have done through the pandemic.”
Chief Nurse at the NHS Trust, Professor Ann-Marie Cannaby, said: “We are proud and delighted to have been given the opportunity of a virtual exhibition at Wolverhampton Art Gallery to celebrate our nurses and midwives at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust.
“This exhibition celebrates our nurses and midwives and is a way for us at the Trust to connect with the public we serve. You will see the diversity that our professions bring with a wide variety of roles and specialities. You will also be able to see the hand mural created by our intensive critical care unit at the height of the pandemic inspired by the staff themselves.
“The pandemic changed many of our plans to celebrate this year. However, we are delighted that this exhibition has come to fruition. We hope you take great pleasure in viewing the exhibit.”
