Walsall’s coronation weekend in review

Events took place between Friday 5 May and Monday 8 May 2023. The festivities included family fundays, street parties and afternoon teas with enough scones and Victoria sponges to sink a ship! A fantastic weekend was had by all, and it was wonderful to see communities come together to celebrate

To help local residents celebrate the momentous occasion, Walsall Council in partnership with Walsall Community Network supported 123 events through its King’s Coronation Fund, totalling £19,422.88
Some of the highlights included a Jubilee tree planting event at Borneo Street Allotments, a coronation walk of faith between places of worship across Walsall, around 20 street parties and plenty of community fundays. Communities really came together, got into the community spirit, and enjoyed the celebrations.

Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Rose Martin, said “It was wonderful to be able to mark such a momentous occasion with communities around Walsall. I very much enjoyed the events that I visited, it was lovely to see so many people come together to share food, drink and laughter.

“More importantly, the weekend was an opportunity to learn more about the different communities that we are so lucky to have here in Walsall and to share in the different cultures. The coronation is an important moment in history and I hope Walsall residents have come away with memories to cherish for many years to come.”

Councillor Garry Perry, Portfolio Holder for Resilient Communities, said “I attended lots of coronation events over the weekend and was proud to see so many people come together and really get into the community spirit.

“The coronation walk of faith was a particular highlight for me, exploring the many different places of worship that we have in Walsall. It was an enlightening experience and really showcased the unity and resilience of our communities. It’s fantastic to be a part of such an important part of our history and I know that it meant a lot to the people of Walsall to be able to come together and celebrate.”
