Children and young people in Walsall have come together to decorate the town centre Christmas tree with tags containing their wishes for Walsall’s future as part of the ‘Make your Walsall wish’ campaign, organised by Walsall Council.
The event, held on Monday 23 December 2024, was also attended by youth workers from Walsall Council along with the council’s youth bus, to encourage young people to engage with youth services and support.
Earlier this month, the council invited Walsall’s young residents to visit a ‘Walsall wish station’ at their local library and write their wishes for Walsall’s future on a Christmas tree tag. The wishes were collected and placed on the tree as part of the event.
The campaign saw over 150 local children and young people sharing their Christmas hopes and dreams for Walsall by writing them on specially designed tags and hanging them on the town’s festive tree. Among the wishes, a young resident hoped for more green spaces to play with friends, while others envisioned less littering and a safer Walsall.
Councillor Garry Perry, Leader of Walsall Council, said, “This initiative embodies the heart of the festive season in Walsall – hope, connection and community.”
“Seeing these wishes displayed on the tree reminds us of the power of the voices of our young people and emphasises the importance of our ambitious plans to make Walsall a vibrant place where people are proud to live and residents in all neighbourhoods have the same life chances.”
With support from local children and Amey the Christmas tree now stands proudly with the tags offering a glimpse into the aspirations Walsall’s youngest residents have for the borough.
The tree will remain on display during the festive period. Residents are encouraged to visit and reflect on the shared hopes for Walsall’s future.
