Walsall Council has opened a public consultation on the draft Walsall Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Strategy, marking a significant step towards enhancing electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in the borough.
The strategy aims to deliver over 660 public EV charging sockets by 2030, addressing the current shortage of available charging points.
With less than 20 EV charging sockets accessible for public use in Walsall, the draft strategy acknowledges the need for a new infrastructure to facilitate better driving and charging experiences for EV owners in the borough.
The consultation period, scheduled from 21 February to 20 March 2024, invites input from stakeholders, businesses, and the public to shape the future of EV chargepoint infrastructure in Walsall. The Walsall Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Strategy outlines a comprehensive plan for deploying charging infrastructure up to 2030, reinforcing the Council's commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions.
To facilitate feedback and engagement, Walsall Council is establishing a dedicated Commonplace webpage on 'Walsall Says', providing stakeholders with access to the draft strategy, a questionnaire, and opportunities to contribute insights that will shape the final implementation plan for EV chargepoints in the borough.
Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Regeneration at Walsall Council, said,
"Walsall Council recognises its role in facilitating a seamless transition for all EV drivers in our borough. Our commitment to becoming a leading net zero carbon economy by 2041 underscores the significance of embracing EVs.
“We are excited to engage stakeholders and the public in this consultation and we aim to tailor the types of chargepoints installed in Walsall to meet the diverse needs of our community, and ensure drivers have the proper infrastructure they need to run their sustainable vehicle effectively.
“I would encourage residents to visit the Walsall Says platform to access the draft Walsall Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Strategy and share their feedback.”
The insights collected during the consultation will shape the final strategy and guide the implementation of chargepoints across Walsall.
