Tamworth celebrates International Women's Day 2023

Event brings together accomplished Tamworth women Sharing thoughts on the international women’s day theme of embracing equity Managing Director of Pickerings Solicitors guest speaker

Tamworth Borough Council welcomed local policy makers and women leaders from across business, charity and local government to an event on the 8 March to celebrate International Women’s Day 2023.

The event, hosted by Councillor Tina Clements, Portfolio Holder for Engagement, Civic Pride and Pride in Place, saw accomplished Tamworth women coming together to share expertise, network and collaborate.

Councillor Tina Clements welcomed Sue Hatton, Managing Director at Pickerings Solicitors, as guest speaker, who shared some of her reflections and experiences throughout her career. Particularly around the International Women’s Day theme of ‘embracing equity’ and shared some thought provoking thoughts encouraging different ways of thinking at home and in the workplace:

Sue Hatton, Managing Director at Pickerings Solicitors said: “Embracing equity is about getting everyone to the same level no matter their starting point. This recognises that fairness can only work when you are at the same place at the start. So, equity is a very different concept.”

International Women’s Day has occurred for well over a century, with the first gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, International Women’s Day belongs to all groups collectively everywhere.

Councillor Tina Clements, Portfolio Holder for Engagement, Civic Pride and Pride in Place said: “I’m proud to see so many accomplished and successful women at what I hope is the first of many such celebrations in Tamworth.

“Sue’s speech was insightful and resonated with all of us in the room; as a working woman, wife, mum I could certainly recognise many of the experiences Sue shared.

“It was such a privilege to spend the afternoon with such company and celebrate women and girls across Tamworth and beyond.”

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women's achievements or rally for women's equality.
