ree festive parking back in the run up to Christmas

Parking will again be free in Tamworth Borough Council run car parks on selected Saturdays leading up to Christmas.

The free festive parking initiative returns this December after what we know will be another difficult month for the town’s business community.

Charges will be waived in all Tamworth Borough Council car parks on two Saturdays – December 5 and December 19. Ankerside Shopping Centre is also offering free parking in its car park on those dates. Please note the offer does not apply to the NCP car park on the site of the former Gungate Precinct.

It is hoped the initiative will encourage more people to come into the town centre to do their Christmas shopping and give the shops and businesses as much of a boost as possible in December.

The December 5 date coincides with the national Small Business Saturday UK campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to 'shop local' and support independent retailers in their communities.

The day itself takes place on the first Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses.

In addition we have launched a new initiative that we hope businesses will take part in – a Festive Window Competition, for display to the public from December 4. Businesses can register to take part at www.visittamworth.co.uk/festive-window-competition .

The ‘We are Angels’ project will also be around the town as an extension to New Urban Era’s Arts work and the council team are delighted to be supporting local artists. Original artworks will be displayed along with printed artworks submitted by the general public, with the idea that visitors in town can stand in the middle of each wing design, take a selfie and share on social media. The hope is to fill Facebook with Christmas cheer and angels by tagging in @TamworthArtsandEvents and @NewurbanEra.

Cllr Rob Pritchard, Deputy Leader of Tamworth Borough Council, said: “We are keen to support the town centre, especially during such a difficult year and with the second lockdown that will be in place during November.

“It gives us a real opportunity to attract new visitors to Tamworth and to support our businesses by demonstrating what the town has to offer.  We hope this, along with the Festive Windows and ‘We are Angels’ art trail, will give shoppers an added incentive to use their local shops, maximise the peak season and get into the Christmas spirit in Tamworth.”
