Children are celebrating the life of Captain Sir Tom Moore this World Book Day.
Pupils at Eastfield Primary School – including those currently being home-schooled – are reading and focussing on One Hundred Steps, an inspirational picture book published in support of the creation of the Captain Tom Foundation.
The book tells the incredible story of the man who walked 100 laps of his garden and captured the heart of a nation – raising tens of millions of pounds for the NHS in the process. Following the key moments from Captain Sir Tom Moore’s life, it shows what is possible when people come together and never, ever give up.
To enable all children to take part in the celebration, the school purchased 288 books – one for every family – and distributed them earlier this week.
Headteacher Sarah Hay said: "Even though World Book Day is going to look a little different this year, we still wanted to mark it together as a school so thought it would be a perfect opportunity to celebrate books, Captain Sir Tom Moore’s life and the fact that we will very soon be starting to come out of the latest Covid-19 lockdown.
"By purchasing a copy of his book for all of our families, we hope we can spread the positive messages Captain Sir Tom Moore lived his life by to all of our children at Eastfield.
"And to mark World Book Day itself we decided to dress up by wearing army gear, a suit and tie or just being 'sporty' – in this way we will all remember what a wonderful individual Captain Sir Tom Moore was."
Councillor Dr Michael Hardacre, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “This is a splendid way to celebrate the legacy of a wonderful individual, and I am sure the pupils at Eastfield Primary School will enjoy learning all about Captain Sir Tom Moore this World Book Day.”
