Progress at new Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station

Building work has progressed at the site of the new £32 million Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station in Walsall.

Frameworks for both the Transfer and Recycling stations, in addition to the reuse shop, can now be seen at the site situated on Middlemore Lane in Aldridge. The Project is expected to be completed in summer 2025.

Before the building works, the tier one contractor Morgan Sindall Construction, had to remove a significant amount of lying surface water from the site to ensure stable foundations for construction in April 2024. Work also took place to re-engineer soil at the site using lime and cement stabilisation techniques.

When complete, the Middlemore Lane site will provide modern, easy-to-use facilities, enabling residents to recycle a wider range of items than is currently possible in the borough.

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth and Regeneration, said, “It is great to see how things have moved forward on the site, the progress from waterlogged land to how it looks now is very impressive.

“This site will serve the borough for many years to come and will play a vital role in delivering a cleaner and greener Walsall.”

A reuse shop, for which the framework is already erected, will provide staff with space to refurbish items that would otherwise have been thrown away. The items, all in good and safe condition, will then be sold at a low cost.

The station will have the capacity to process 40,000 tonnes of rubbish per year across 19 bays, each housing two skips.

Councillor Kerry Murphy, Portfolio Holder for Street Pride, said, “The progress on the site is absolutely brilliant to see.

“The new Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station will ensure we can continue to provide services for our ever-increasing population in the borough.”

Richard Fielding, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction in the Midlands, said: "It's great to celebrate the next milestone of this vital waste management facility for Walsall.

“Working alongside Walsall Council and Pagabo, we're creating a modern, environmentally friendly facility that will serve the community's needs, while supporting the council's sustainability ambitions.

“We're now looking forward to working on the next phase of the project with our partners and granting access to fully enhanced waste and recycling for the area when the work is complete.”
