Over 150,000 residents receive first life-saving Covid-19 jab

More than 150,000 adults in Wolverhampton have now had their first life-saving Covid-19 jab.

Latest figures show 151,139 residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 111,492 have had both, giving them maximum protection against the deadly virus. In total, 262,631 vaccinations have now been delivered in the city.

Anyone who is aged 21 and over, or who will turn 21 before July 1, can now book their vaccination at www.nhs.uk/covidvaccine. The vaccine is also available to the clinically extremely vulnerable, people with a learning disability, frontline health and social care workers and people in receipt of Carer's Allowance or who are the main carer of an elderly or disabled person.

Councillor Jasbir Jaspal, the City of Wolverhampton Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: “The vaccine is the best protection we have against coronavirus, significantly reducing your risk of getting seriously ill or dying from Covid-19, and of catching and spreading it to others.

“The roll out of the vaccination programme has been nothing short of incredible and it’s great news that over 150,000 adults in our city have now had at least one jab – and that over 110,000 have the maximum protection from Covid-19 after getting both doses.

“If you’re aged 21 or over, or are otherwise eligible, please book your jab as soon as possible.”

She added: “The infection rate here, as elsewhere, has risen noticeably over the last month, driven largely by the new Delta variant – indeed, case numbers in Wolverhampton have tripled in three weeks, with 112 people in the city testing positive for Covid-19 virus in the week to 14 June, though the true number of new cases will likely be higher.

“We know that two doses of the vaccine are highly effective against hospitalisation from the Delta variant, so, when it is your turn to to have the Covid-19 jab, make sure you take it. And please get both jabs, because without being fully vaccinated you and your loved ones are still vulnerable.”

Councillor Jaspal added: “Please remember that even once you have had both doses of the vaccine, you must still continue to adhere to the measures the Government has put in place to stop the spread of Covid-19, and follow the Hands, Face, Space and Fresh Air guidance. Please also get a regular rapid test to reassure yourselves and others that you don’t have the virus.”

For details of rapid testing, please visit www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/get-tested. Anyone with symptoms of Covid-19, which include a fever, a new continuous cough or a change to the sense of taste or smell, must immediately self-isolate and book a PCR test by visiting www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test or calling 119.
