NHS COVID passes introduced to reduce spread of infection

Following the implementation of ‘Plan B’ to curb the spread of COVID-19, the NHS COVID pass has been introduced to help curb the spread of infection.

To gain access to nightclubs, some venues and large events, you will need to show your NHS COVID pass which confirms that you are either fully vaccinated, have had a negative symptom-free test result in the last 48 hours, or you have a medical exemption.

The NHS COVID pass is quick and easy to obtain. If you have a smartphone, visit the App or Play Store and search for ‘NHS App’. From there, you’ll be able to access your COVID pass, order repeat prescriptions and book GP appointments all from your phone. Alternatively, you can request a paper COVID pass letter by calling 119 or visiting www.nhs.uk/coronavirus.

Free lateral flow testing kits are available from local pharmacies, Council buildings, some community venues and online on the NHS website.

Director of Public Health, Stephen Gunther, said: “COVID-19 infections across Walsall and the country continue to rise following the discovery of the Omicron variant.

“In an effort to control the spread plan B measures included reintroducing working from home, face coverings in most public spaces and NHS Covid passes becoming necessary for some venues, events or for travelling purposes.

“The pass will indicate that you have either had two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine or to prove you have recorded a negative symptom-free test using a lateral flow device on the government website within 48 hours.

“There has never been a more important time to come forward to get your vaccination - whether it is your first, second or booster jab. Every dose of the vaccine strengthens our line of defence against the virus, and helps protect you, as well as your family and friends.”

Councillor Stephen Craddock, Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing said: “I’d like to thank every resident in Walsall for playing their part so far in helping us reduce transmission of COVID-19.

“Following hands, face, space and letting in fresh-air continues to be important. I would like to reiterate the importance of taking a symptom-free test before visiting friends and family this Christmas to keep everyone safe.

“The number one tool we have is vaccinations. If you have not taken up your offer of the vaccine, please book your jab now it is not too late. The same applies to your booster. They are safe, effective and over 200,000 people in Walsall have benefitted from in alongside millions of people in England.”
