A new series of interpretation panels are being installed throughout the Castle Grounds to highlight Tamworth’s rich heritage, thanks to the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund (CRF) to help protect the future of the nation’s creative and cultural organisations.
New panels include dedicated information on Aethelflaed, the anchor and urns, the motte and a new ‘Inside the Bailey’ board.
The interpretation panels will provide bite size information relating to many of the objects and sites within the Castle Grounds and monument. The information includes historical facts, images and stories of the iconic statues and historic features, for people to read while spending time enjoying the surroundings.
The re-opening of the town’s iconic castle following the easing of the pandemic restrictions and the launch of a new state-of-the-art and interactive exhibition, has offered visitors the chance to interact with the town’s rich heritage and embrace local history.
Tamworth Borough Council was awarded £501,000 from the Government’s £1.57bn Culture Recovery Fund to help protect the future of the nation’s creative and cultural organisations.
This award included a total of £374,850 for Tamworth Castle and a further £126,150 for Tamworth Assembly Rooms, to help the venues survive the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and beyond.
Councillor Robert Pritchard, Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “The pandemic has further magnified the need to highlight and inform visitors of the town’s main cultural offering and great history.
“The funding from CRF is enabling the implementation of the new interpretation panels and ensuring that the castle experience meets the expectations of modern audiences, by developing new features for visitors and new digital audiences.
“These include the creation of a new augmented reality trail, which is now live throughout the castle for people to enjoy as part of their visit, and an online collection and archive of historical artefacts and objects.
“After a challenging year with the lockdown restrictions, we welcome everyone to our town. We are delighted that our historic venues are open and people can visit the Castle Grounds freely.
“The panels really help us showcase our rich heritage and share our amazing Tamworth story. It has been exciting to have an archaeologist on site while the new posts are dug for the panels, so far unveiling pottery pieces suggested to be Victorian! What else might be uncovered?”
