How we are working with partners to help support victims of violence, harassment and abuse

Today marks the start of the UN’s international 16 Days of Action campaign against gender-based violence. Cllr John Cotton looks at how Birmingham works with partners to support victims of violence, harassment and abuse.

This year White Ribbon Day, which marks the start of the 16 Days of Action campaign, coincides with the FIFA World Cup. It is a grim truth that there is a clear correlation between football tournaments and increases in reported incidents of domestic abuse.  We must never remain silent, or stand by, in the face of this most appalling of crimes.

To empower men to be allies to women and girls, Birmingham Community Safety Partnership is holding a Stand By Her workshop on 12 December. This work is essential in challenging attitudes that can lead to harassment and abuse of women and girls.

As well as tackling attitudes and urging all men to take the White Ribbon Promise – to never commit, excuse or remain silent on male violence against women and girls – it’s vital to remind those experiencing any kind of abuse that support is available.

Whether it’s feeling unsafe walking home, feeling controlled or threatened by a partner or having your finances exploited by a loved one – there are organisations that can help you.

We commission a number of specialist domestic abuse services that provide tailored and dedicated support to victims and their children. These include:

  • Refuges and long-term accommodation, which offer a safe space where women receive specialist support from keyworkers and can start to rebuild their lives following abuse.
  • Lead workers who will offer one-to-one longer term support to women in need.
  • Domestic Abuse Hub – includes helpline open every day, webchat, drop-in, and housing support.
  • New community projects such as counselling, one-to-one support in the community to women from Black, Asian or marginalised ethnic backgrounds, and support for women with learning disabilities.

Taking the first step can be the most difficult, so if you are unsure, please call our commissioned helpline, run by Birmingham & Solihull Women’s Aid, on 0808 800 0028, or use their webchat via their website

Details of organisations offering support to anyone experiencing domestic abuse can be found on the council's website

If you have been affected by sexual abuse the Rape and Sexual Violence Project offers help and support on 0121 643 0301 or email info@rsvporg.co.uk

Remember – there is no excuse for abuse, and you are not alone.
