Enjoy the big game safely

Fans are being urged not to mix with others when they watch the huge Euro 2020 clash between England and Germany tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday).

It comes amid rising infection Covid-19 rates in Wolverhampton – which have hit levels not seen since the middle of the last lockdown.

Latest figures show there were 100.2 new cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 people in Wolverhampton over the seven days to 25 June. That means a total of 263 people tested positive in that seven day period – though the true number of new cases will likely be higher.

Councillor Jasbir Jaspal, the City of Wolverhampton Council's Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: "Covid-19 thrives on human contact, so it's no surprise that infection rates have risen rapidly since the further relaxation of lockdown measures last month.

"But each and every one of us still has it within our powers to stop the spread of this deadly virus by following the Hands, Face, Space and Fresh Air guidance and limiting our contact with others.

"So if you are planning on watching the big match tomorrow, either down the pub, or with extended family and friends, please be careful and don't mix with others – even if England do score a last minute winner! Please also get a free rapid test before meeting up to with others reassure yourself, and them, that you don't have Covid-19."

Current rules mean there is a limit on the number of people who can mix indoors – up to six individuals, or two households – and that pubs, bars and restaurants must operate within capacity limits. Venues must only offer table service and customers should wear a face covering except when seated at a table to eat or drink, unless they are exempt for medical reasons.

Officers from the police and the council's licensing team will once again be visiting pubs and bars around the city to ensure venues are operating in a Covid-secure manner.

Councillor Steve Evans, Cabinet Member for City Environment, said: “The vast majority of our pubs and bars are doing an excellent job in ensuring they are operating safely and we are happy to give them all the support they need to protect their staff and customers from this deadly virus.

“Our aim to ensure we can protect as many citizens as possible, while at the same time allowing everyone to safely enjoy major events like Euro 2020.”
