Lozells is the second area in Birmingham where people are being consulted about expanding and making permanent the temporary measures instigated, last year to create Places for People.
Last year, a one-way system was created and streets were narrowed by large planters which made it difficult for cars to cut-through the residential area situated between Heathfield Road, Lozells Road and Nursery Road. These changes reduced traffic and made the streets safer for all.
The first phase of the programme introduced one-way sections on Anglesey Street, Archibald Road, Church Street, Finch Road, Graham Street and Hunters Road. This made cycling and walking safer and more pleasant for residents when travelling locally.
For a period of one month from 18 November 2021, Lozells residents will be consulted upon the second phase of the plan which will create more one-way streets, new pedestrian crossings and prevents direct access by motor vehicles from Lozells Road to Barker Street.
The council would like to know which aspects of the conceptual design residents would like to change and keep.
Birmingham City Council Member for Transport and Environment, Councillor Waseem Zaffar said:
I am delighted to be providing my constituents with a choice in the development of their Place for People. Already residents have gained benefits from the new one-way system and I look forward to hearing about how they would like to shape the scheme in the neighbourhood.
Full details about the consultation, including a short questionnaire, may be found at: www.birminghambeheard.org.uk/economy/lozellspfp.
Consultation information is also available at the Birchfield Library and comments will be accepted by post or in-person at a consultation event at the Lighthouse Young People’s Centre.
Following consultation, the council will create a final detailed design for both sides of Lozells Road. This will inform an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order - the legal document needed to change roads.
Consultation closes on Friday 17 December 2021.
The scheme could be built in early 2022 and will form part of a wider cycling and walking network that will expand across the West Midlands, supporting the local authorities initiative to increase journeys by bicycle from 1% to 5% by 2023.
Places for People is a project funded by the Active Travel Fund and is part of the West Midlands Cycle & Walk programme. It will be delivered in partnership with Transport for West Midlands.
