Competition helps spread anti-littering messaging across Walsall parks

Local school children in Walsall have put their creative skills to work as part of a competition to design banners discouraging littering and urging people to instead use a bin.

The competition saw an overwhelming response with over 700 entries from 19 schools across the borough.

The many colourful and creative entries were whittled down to four winners. The winning designs will be brought to life as eye-catching banners to be displayed across 12 Walsall parks over the summer. The banners will act as a vibrant reminder for the community to value and maintain the cleanliness of their local parks.

The winners of the competition were:

•            Sophie, Year 6, Cooper and Jordan C of E School 

•            Jai, Year 6 

•            Sofia, Year 5, St. Thomas of Canterbury Primary School

•            Isabella, Year 4, Whetstone Field Primary School

In conjunction with Love Parks Week (26 July to 4 August 2024), an awards ceremony was held at the Walsall Arboretum bandstand on Wednesday 31 July 2024. The event not only recognised the creative efforts of the young participants but also re-emphasised the important message of keeping the borough’s parks pristine.

The Mayor of Walsall was present to congratulate the creative efforts of the young participants and re-enforce the council's commitment to environmental cleanliness. 

Councillor Anthony Harris, the Mayor of Walsall, said, “As we celebrate Love Parks Week, we are reminded of the immense value our natural green spaces and parks add to our community. They are not just patches of greenery but are vital assets that enhance our quality of life.

“It's imperative that we keep them clean and preserve their beauty for future generations. I am incredibly proud of all the young artists who have contributed to this cause through their artwork. 

“Their submissions not only highlight the importance of our parks but also will play a crucial role in spreading the message of environmental responsibility. Congratulations to each participant for their creative efforts.”

A spokesperson from Helping Hands said, “We we’re thrilled to sponsor this competition and empower the next generation to champion the anti-littering message. 

“Supporting these young participants not only promotes environmental stewardship but also inspires a cleaner, greener future for us all."

Residents are reminded to responsibly dispose of their waste in the bins provided across local parks, or to take it home.
