Tamworth Castle celebrating Staffordshire Day with a trail of legends, folklore and local town facts Normal castle admission fees apply Visitors invited to try the town AR app trail to discover more about the town’s history
Tamworth Borough Council is joining the Staffordshire Day celebrations this year by inviting visitors to take part in a castle family trail.
Attractions across the county are holding a series of events and activities to celebrate what is great about Staffordshire on Monday 1 May. At Tamworth Castle, families are invited to discover a trail to learn about legends, folklore and fantastic Staffordshire facts.
As visitors explore the castle rooms, they will uncover some unusual and fascinating facts linked to various towns and villages throughout the county. Stories of legends and tales of Abbots Bromley Horn Dance and the history of Stoke-on-Trent’s oatcakes are just a few to be mentioned.
A trail sheet with a Staffordshire map will be given to each visitor with sections to complete, for the chance to claim a small reward at the end of their visit from the castle reception desk.
Normal admission fees apply. Opening hours are 10am-4pm (last admission at 2pm). No pre-booking required but you can book online here: Staffordshire Day Trail | Award-Winning Heritage in a Stunning Castle (tamworthcastle.co.uk),
Visitors are also invited to learn more about the town by downloading and following the augmented reality trail that showcases Tamworth’s rich history around Tamworth town centre.
The AR trail has been developed throughout Tamworth town centre, which brings the town’s heritage to life using augmented reality technology.
As you explore the streets using the app, you will find yourself coming face to face with some of the town’s best loved historical characters, discovering the resilience of its community and how Tamworth has continued to thrive through many times of adversity.
Alternatively, for a younger audience, there is a family friendly ‘Love Tamworth’ augmented reality trail offering mini games and challenges in and around Tamworth town centre.
To download the app search for 'Tamworth AR trails' in the Google play or Apple app store (whichever you use). Then install the app onto your device (make sure to do this over a secure Wifi connection for a fast download).
During your visit to Tamworth on Staffordshire Day, people also have the opportunity to enjoy activities taking place in the Castle Grounds. These include a Dine n Devour experience and Barkers Fair will be on site.
The annual Staffordshire Day campaign aims to promote our county as a great place to live, work, invest and do business and showcase Staffordshire as a fantastic place to visit.
People are encouraged to join in Staffordshire celebrations by using the hashtag #StaffordshireDay on social media, along with any images of the place they love to live and events they take part in.
Anna Miller, Assistant Director of Growth and Regeneration for Tamworth Borough Council, said: “Staffordshire Day is the ideal opportunity to find out more about what great attractions our town has to offer.
“Our castle is adding an additional trail to visitors on 1 May so that people can discover more unusual and fascinating facts about Staffordshire and local areas.
“Take a visit, try something new or learn something different, you might be surprised with what you discover!”
