Birmingham’s celebration of Black History Month will be launched with a special event this weekend (30 September).
Whether you are a history enthusiast, art lover or simply curious about Black culture, Saturday’s launch event at Legacy Centre for Excellence, in Potters Lane, Aston is open to everyone.
It is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the community and gain a deeper understanding of the contributions made by Black community / individuals throughout history.
Discover the stories of influential Black figures, enjoy live music and dance performances, and Barrel Children Screening celebrating 75th year Windrush anniversary.
This free event runs from 2pm to 10pm, with the film screening at 6pm, and tickets are available via the Eventbrite website.
Birmingham’s Black heritage and its citizens’ own stories will also raise awareness of the challenges and the perceptions that have restricted their access to opportunities, progress and participation in our society.
Blackstory Partnership, producers of this year’s Black History Month brochure provides a list of events, activities and exhibitions taking place during October.
The brochure and details of these events and others can be found on the Birmingham Black History Month website at www.birminghamblackhistorymonth.co.uk
Birmingham Museums are also hosting a range of events during Black History Month including Vanley Burke’s latest exhibition Blood & Fire at Soho House, and a film and discussion about the 1985 Handsworth Riots with visual artist Pogus Caesar.
Brochures will be available at various community and city locations, in particular Library of Birmingham, New Street Station and Birmingham heritage sites – as well as at Saturday’s launch event.
