Bandstand to open following major conservation repairs

Extensive conservation repair work to the Castle Bandstand is now complete.

In late October 2023, senseless vandalism saw damage to the bandstand gate and balustrades. When investigating the damage, it was found further work was necessary to preserve and maintain the much-used bandstand.

Work started April this year and the extensive conservation programme included replacement timbers, joists, floorboards and balustrades. Working on a heritage building is complex; with specialist contractors working to make sure all materials and rendering were sensitively replaced to heritage conservation guidelines and standards, this has involved matching original fixings, paintwork and craftsmanship.

The final stage of repairs finished last week, with the new flooring receiving a protective stain and all work signed off by the architect, building control and the conservation officer.

Councillor Nova Arkney, portfolio holder for infrastructure, heritage and local economy, said: “Repairs and restoration of our beloved bandstand have taken longer than anticipated, but it was right to take the time to make sure this beautiful asset was repaired sensitively to a high standard, returning to its former glory through heritage conservation.

“Our bandstand is a well-used asset in our Castle Grounds, and we remain committed to making sure it is maintained and preserved, so it can be used and enjoyed for many years to come.”
