Since construction work on the project began in June 2020, the majority of the key elements have been successfully completed.
These include the removal of the Perry Barr flyover, the installation of a new bridge at what used to be Birchfield Island, the reconfiguration of Birchfield Junction and the introduction of a new all-ways junction at the One Stop shopping centre/Harrier Way, which now allows access to this entrance from all directions.
In addition to this, vast amounts of road resurfacing and the repaving of footways has been undertaken along with work to deliver a new bus interchange.
As of this month (May 2022), the remaining work continues to be completed in a phased manner, as has been the case throughout the duration of the scheme.
All final surfacing works are set to be complete by the end of June, which will mark the point of substantial completion, with just some finishing works to some footways left to complete
Ahead of substantial completion, one of the last remaining major pieces of work will involve carriageway resurfacing on the Birchfield Road (northbound).
From Friday 13 May (8pm) until Monday 16 May (6am), the Birchfield Road northbound slip will be closed from Birchfield Junction to One Stop. On Sunday 15 May, the traffic management will switch to an A34 northbound closure, with all traffic management removed by Monday 16 May (6am).
A signposted diversion will be in place and anyone wishing to visit locations in the area, or those preparing for travel that passes through, are urged to plan ahead.
We apologise for any inconvenience and thank people for their continued patience as the scheme reaches completion.
This is one of the final key elements of the improvements programme, creating a new road layout to support the wider £700 million-plus regeneration of Perry Barr; providing better access to public transport and improving facilities for cycling and walking.
